The Cool Season (November – February)
Clear skies, soft light, and perfect days. This is Chiang Mai at its most iconic. Mornings begin cool and gentle. Days are warm but comfortable. Evenings invite long walks, outdoor dining, and unhurried exploration.
It is, understandably, the most popular time to visit, and for good reason. During this season, the city also hosts one of its most magical moments:
- Yi Peng Lantern Festival & Loy Krathong Festival – For a few nights each year, Chiang Mai becomes deeply atmospheric as both festivals are celebrated together. Loy Krathong is marked by the gentle release of floating offerings onto rivers and waterways, symbolising letting go and renewal.
Yi Peng, known for its sky lanterns, was once widely celebrated across the city. However, lantern releases are now restricted for safety reasons. Guests wishing to experience this tradition must attend organised events held in designated areas on the outskirts of the city, where advance tickets are required.
While different in form, both festivals share a quiet, reflective beauty — less about spectacle, and more about intention and atmosphere.
The Hot Season (March – May)
Golden light, slower days, and fewer crowds. As temperatures rise, Chiang Mai softens. Afternoons are best spent indoors, perhaps by the pool, or enjoying a long, leisurely lunch. Early mornings and evenings become the moments to explore.
This season carries a different kind of beauty, one that reveals itself in stillness rather than activity. It is also when Thailand celebrates:
A joyful, city-wide celebration where water becomes a symbol of renewal. Streets come alive with laughter, energy, and shared experience.

The Green Season (June – October)
Lush landscapes, quiet moments, and a deeper calm. Often overlooked, this is perhaps Chiang Mai’s most poetic season.
Rain arrives in gentle rhythms, rarely constant, often refreshing. The surrounding mountains turn a deep, vibrant green. The air feels softer, cleaner. For couples and culture travellers, this season offers something rare:
- Space
- Quiet
- A more intimate connection to the destination
It is a time for:
- Slow mornings
- Spa rituals
- Long conversations over coffee
A Note on Seasonal Haze
During certain periods (typically March to early April), Northern Thailand may experience seasonal haze due to agricultural burning.
We always recommend checking conditions in advance, and our team is happy to provide guidance to ensure the best possible experience during your stay.
Choosing Your Moment
Rather than asking “when is best?”, consider asking:
- Do you want energy or tranquility?
- Festivals or stillness?
- Exploration or retreat?
Each season offers a different answer.
